“We are excited to bring fans a new presentation of Ken,” said Krista Berger, Mattel’s Senior Vice President of Barbie. She said the doll celebrates “LeBron as a role model,” highlighting his ability as an icon to transcend culture and set a “positive example for the next generation.”
A Doll That Tells a Story
The Ohio native is no stranger to breaking records and smashing barriers on or off the court, and this is just another milestone to add to his list of accomplishments. The doll features James styled in a blue varsity jacket with “LJ” on the front. One sleeve features an Ohio patch, while his jersey number, 23, decorates the other. On the back, “LeBron” is printed in bold letters along with the phrase “Just a Kid from Akron,” referring to the city where he was born. Under the jacket, the doll wears a shirt that reads “We Are Family,” a nod to the NBA player’s foundation. The Ken doll also comes with accessories, including a basketball, headphones, and sneakers.
A Powerful Message from LeBron
“As a young kid, I was fortunate to have role models who not only inspired me but also showed me what’s possible through hard work and dedication,” said LeBron James. “Now, as an adult, I understand how vital it is for young people to have positive figures to look up to. That’s why partnering with Barbie to release the LeBron James Kenbassador doll is such an honor. It’s an opportunity to recognize the powerful impact of role models who instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness.”
Giving Back to the Community
In honor of the collaboration, Barbie will make a donation to James’ foundation, inspiring more generational change and teaching kids that anything is possible.
“Barbie is proud to partner with the LeBron James Family Foundation, which James founded to further his mission to uplift his local community in Akron, Ohio. The Foundation provides tangible support to families through education, housing, healthcare, and job training. “These life-changing resources, combined with the Foundation’s ‘We Are Family’ philosophy, work to redefine what a family and community look like,” said Mattel in a statement.
A Milestone for Ken
Barbie has honored athletes from Serena Williams to Naomi Osaka, but LeBron James joins the lineup as the first male addition. This could potentially be the first in a long line of Kenbassadors.
