This student/model saw an interesting turn of events after attending Howard University’s Homecoming, Washington. Anok Yai was surprised when her Instagram started going wild after being photographed celebrating; read all about it below.
Anok Yai – Student Turned Model
The photographer in question, who goes by @thesunk was at the homecoming snapping street fashion when he came across 19-year-old Anok Yia whom he noted as “stunning.” MEFeater would have to agree!
The New Hampshire native who grew up in Manchester is a sophomore at Plymouth State University. And while the modest student is currently still studying biochemistry with the intention of becoming a doctor, Anok said she’d love to dive into the modeling industry part-time now. The photograph taken has gained 43,900+ likes on Anok’s Instagram page so far and she’s since signed to modeling agency Next Management founded in New York City. “When it got to a couple thousand and it just kept going higher and higher, I was surprised. And I was happy. I always wanted it to happen, but it [her modeling career] was something I never expected.”
Speaking to the Washington Post about her nerves and what diversity means for black women nowadays, Anok said: “When I was younger I was extremely insecure about my skin color…All I saw was light-skinned and white girls in the media. Now, I can speak my mind on certain topics and have people that will definitely listen. Now, I can use my mind and tell people about colorism and teach girls about self-confidence.”
We wish Anok all the best and can’t wait to see her on our catwalks very soon!
