In an eyeroll worthy turn of events, American Idol will be returning. Although the franchise just completed its “finale” season in April 2016, the competition will be back on television some time next year. However, instead of being under Fox, FremantleMedia will be moving the show to ABC.
The network change isn’t the only fresh part to the new Idol. Katy Perry is set to sit on the judges’ panel, for a $25 million dollar paycheck. It’s hard to say, if she alone will be able to bring back viewership. Ratings have dropped over 70 percent in the last 4 years, according to Fox TV chairman Dana Walden. Fox is pretty mad that FremantleMedia is moving on so quickly. Their long love affair was actually supposed to continue in 2020. However, Fremantle did not want to make creative changes to Idol later on.
It seems that most of us have moved on.
Are we past the point of Idol in America? Or will next year actually bring something worth watching?
