It’s been nearly six months, but the world is still obsessed with Tyla‘s smash hit single “Water.” The South African sensation captivated listeners with her voice and African flair. So, it didn’t take long for “Water” to become a viral hit. In fact, the upbeat Amapiano song has inspired countless covers and remixes. From Trevor Jackson’s expressive cover to an addictive Tyla and Beyoncé mashup, here are six “Water” remixes and covers worth adding to your playlist.
1. Tyla & Beyoncé “Water” Mashup
Caleb Coleman is known for creating song mashups and remixes. He mixed Tyla’s viral hit with Queen Bey’s “Water” from her 2019 album “The Gift,” creating a supercharged Afrobeats song that makes you want to hit the dance floor.
“So lately, I’ve been obsessed with Tyla’s viral hit ‘Water,’ and it’s been playing in my head 24/7,” Coleman shared in the YouTube video description. “Well, one day I was listening, and ‘WATER’ from Beyoncé’s ‘The Gift’ album came across my mind. I thought, ‘Woah, I think that would sound good together!'”
Beyoncé’s “Water” was the perfect pairing for this song, with both tracks heavily influenced by African culture and music. Those factors make this version an authentic mashup that will go No. 1 in our house.
2. Trevor Jackson’s “Water” TMIX
Known as one of the most controversial renditions of “Water,” Trevor Jackson‘s (TMix) birthed unforgettable reactions across social media. The one-minute cover had X users (formerly known as Twitter) divided due to Jackson’s intense facial expressions and hypersexual lyrics. Although the song is initially sexual, listeners felt that Jackson’s cover was too much.
This is not the first time the “Grown-ish” star came under fire for one of his TMixes, previously receiving backlash for his Beyoncé and Victoria Monét covers. Even though he received a mixed reaction from fans, Tyla commended Jackson on his performance and rated it a 12 out of 10.
“He was passionate… People are mean,” said Tyla in a November 2023 interview with Justin Credible of Power 106 LA. “He loved the song. He was feeling it.”
3. Capella Grey “Water” Remix
With the latest string of “Water” remixes floating around, Capella Grey threw his hat into the ring. The Bronx native affectionately sings to his love interest, whom he wants to spend time with and make sweat. The crooner brings a sensual R&B vibe to the song that mellows you out in the best way possible.
“Lemme make you sweat/Lemme make you hotter/Make you lose your breath/Make you drip water”
4. Chrissy on Air “Water” Cover
Chrissy Spratt, aka ChrissyOnAir, has been covering songs since 2020. The Canadian singer has amassed a huge online following on YouTube and TikTok, performing covers from various artists. Chrissy’s angelic voice floats over Tyla’s song, providing a coolness and serenity. Her cover is definitely on our list of favorites.
5. Marshmello “Water” Remix
Tyla tapped award-winning DJ and producer Marshmello to ramp up her hit with a dance floor-ready rendition. The mix changes the vibe, and Afrobeats are replaced by piano and harp melodies with an EDM drop. Marshmello’s version of “Water” is the perfect track to throw on when you’re heading out with your girls for a night of dancing.
6. Travis Scott “Water” Remix
In addition to tapping Marshmello for a remix, the South African pop star received a call from Travis Scott about the track.
“I didn’t think of doing a remix,” Tyla told Complex in December 2023. “I was like, ‘No, like, let’s just have ‘Water,’ it’s cool, whatever.’ But then people were reaching out, and I was like, ‘Oh my word, oh my word. And I started getting excited, and then Travis reached out, and I literally couldn’t… like, I could not say no; his music is crazy. So after he reached out, we sent him that open verse. He came back and killed.”
Thanks to the Tyla “Water” remixes and covers, fans are excited to see what songs from her debut album will garner the same attention. And with the promise of her debut album in 2024, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
