If you don’t know who Enny is, let us introduce you to the “Peng Black Girl” who is bringing a new style of British female rap.
Enitan Adepitan, known as Enny, is a 26-year-old British-Nigerian rapper. Enny is from Thamesmead, in the south-east of London, UK, and has multiple talents. Enny grew up around gospel music and was inspired by artists like Lauryn Hill, and even the rapper J.Cole. She has always wanted to be a rapper. After years of writing, she decided in April 2020 to drop her first single “He’s Not Into You”. The song received positive reviews from critics and has been played on local England radios. Thanks to her talent, Enny was noticed by Jorja Smith. Jorja liked her style and signed Enny to her independent label, FAMM. From there, Enny released the powerful song “Peng Black Girls”, featuring Amia Brave.
PENG BLACK GIRLS : AN HYMN TO BLACK BEAUTY
The first thing to know is that the definition of”Peng” means “good-looking” or “awesome” in UK slang.
Through the lyrics and the music video, “PBG” is a song that highlights topics such as Black women’s feelings, Black culture, Black beauties, and its lack of representation in media. In addition, the simplicity of the video makes it more special. From Enny rapping around Black women in her suburb to the quick shots of the women of her family wearing Nigerian traditional outfits enjoying, it is just cool to watch.
During the video, all Black women of all shapes, hairstyles, and shades are portrayed. “There’s no story behind the track and I like that. I just remember having a moment of inspiration while walking to the train station one night.” Enny said to i-D.vice.com. Three words to remember the song by: Sisterhood, Black, and Beauty. “Peng Black Girls” featuring Amia Brave have currently more than 1 million views on Youtube.
