In NYC, running is part of the landscape and part of the culture. Runners across the five boroughs make running a part of their everyday routine – whether they are running for the bus or running the NY marathon. That’s why I love to use Nike’s Studio NYC; it connects me and fellow runners through community runs.
BIPOC runners are a large portion of NYC’s runners intending to decompress, lead healthier lives (mentally and physically), explore our beautiful city, and connect socially.
More than 50% of NYC’s population is made up of BIPOC, most of whom live in the borough with the greenest spaces across the five boroughs (The Bronx). So, it is shocking to see these low participation rates in running.
Running USA’s 2020 National Runner Survey found that only three percent of all U.S. runners are Black. In an earlier survey, only 6 percent of overall runners identified as Hispanic.
With social groups like Black Girls Run and New York Road Runners, professional and hobby runners alike find community (or one-on-one time) when running. We spoke with a few New Yorkers who identify as BIPOC about what running means to them and what their running routine looks like.

What does “running” mean to you? What does it do for you?
“I run to de-stress. I run to unplug from whatever it is I’m tackling at work or at home. It gives me time to myself, where I can challenge myself or take it easy when I just need a recharge. It allows me to step away and get some sun on my skin when I’m feeling chained to my desk.”
What is your #1 running essential?
“My # 1 running essential? A killer playlist! Depending on my mood, I’ll either put on my ‘Bo$$y playlist’ which features Meg and Flo Milli, or my ‘Chill Vibes playlist’, which features 070 Shake and Khalid. Running is immersive and allows me to curate my own world.”
Joseph A Gibson, MSC, West Harlem Resident, 27(M), @_josephgibson
What does “running” mean to you? What does it do for you?
“For me, running allows me to be my freest self, be in tune with my pace, my stride, and breathing. It allows me to be in tune with my body.”
Do you track your runs?
“I usually like to run at my own pace. If I’m training for a marathon or race, I’ll use a tracking app to pace myself and monitor my progress, but when I’m running leisurely, I allow my body to challenge me.”
What are your running must-haves?
“My running must-haves are my running belt (as opposed to an armband) because I like to keep it light, running gel that provides electrolytes, and, of course, my photo ID. As a black man running, I have to carry identification everywhere I go.”
Where’s your favorite place in NYC to run?
“I’m a huge fan of waterside running, so I love running from Riverside Park to Battery Park then back up the FDR.”
Cameron Ramos, 27(M), @camalicc
What does “running” mean to you? What does it do for you?
“Running is my escape from the realities of my day-to-day. It gives me the opportunity to connect with my mind, body, and soul. It challenges me to see my strengths and to advance my weaknesses in areas that can be better.”
Do you use running apps?
“Unfortunately, I don’t use any running apps. If anything I time myself for a 30-minute run 4 days out the week and extend my runs by 30 minutes more on my days off from work. Sometimes even longer, depending on the weather and my mood.”
What’s your favorite place to run in NYC?
“My favorite place to run is in Riverbank State Park. It’s such a beautiful park that has a great trail to jog on. Plus it’s a beautiful view of Manhattan and the New Jersey skyline.”
Joseph V, 28(M), West Harlem Resident
What does “running” mean to you?
I love to run because it gets my juices flowing, clears my head, and releases endorphins.
What’s your running must-have?
An upbeat playlist is essential, but you may occasionally catch me listening to Snoh Aalegra.
Do you use running apps?
I like any app with good tracking and analytics that integrates with my music app.
In NYC, running is part of the culture. From beginners to marathon runners, ultimately, it is a de-stressor and an escape from everyday life. A way to get in touch with our bodies and explore our dynamic city.
