The world has long been fascinated with the affairs of royals. This week, Pippa Middleton’s wedding captivated news outlets. Her sister, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, has been in the spotlight for years now. Her televised wedding to Prince William was a time of celebration. However, the Japanese royal family will likely have a different experience. The recent engagement of Princess Mako to her college boyfriend is causing concern in the imperial family.
When Princess Mako is wed to Kei Komuro, she will become a commoner. This would not be an issue, except for the fact that her family has only a small line of succession left. This line of succession can only run through royal males. Because women cannot rule due to Imperial Household Law, the four males left besides the current emperor are not enough to create clear lineage for the future.
Many in Japan are talking of changing the Imperial Household Law, and allowing women to hold the throne, as well as possibly their children. It is unclear if this change will take place, but for now, we should hope that Princess Mako’s commitment to Kei Komuro is a long and happy one, royal or not.
