Get to know Mapy, the Violin Queen who breaks rules!
Growing up in Paris ??
Mapy grew up in Paris but is originally Reunionese Creole. Her family originates from a French Island in the southeast of Africa. During her childhood, she listened to a lot of music. Mapy learned classical violin at the Conservatory in Paris. Acoording to Mapy, it was a very strict environment. Students had to be dressed in a certain uniform and were forced to learn classical music amongst other things. Besides her lessons, Mapy experimented with other genres of musics such as raggae, soca, Afro beats, and hip-hop. After her degree she was unable to find a job offering the recognization she expected. In France, violin is a very “white” discipline. What do you do when you don’t feel confortable in a space MEFeaters? MOVE ON, and this is exactly what Mapy did!
The American Dream ?
In 2018, Mapy decided to quit her job and move to Brooklyn, N.Y to “chase her dream“. This was probably her best decision ever because she has reached amazing heights thanks to her talent! Mapy’s Instagram videos frequently go viral which brings her constant notoriety.
She has worked with stars such as Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dog, Waka Flocka, French Montana and more. Last March, she even performed “Rockstar” at the Grammy Awards with DaBaby.???
A Moral behind her story ?
We love the fact that Mapy can play all genres. She is the true definition of determination. Despite the white violon environnement, she sticked to her dreams! We love seeing Black women open up doors that allow other Black women to share their place. Thanks to Mapy for opening the door. We can’t wait to see the rest of her journey!??
