The ladies of Black Hollywood often receive praise for their many iconic outfits. At every red carpet event, fans look to see who will be styling and profiling. Over the years, viewers have admittedly grown weary of seeing men wear simple Black tuxedos to the red carpet. However, a few Black men should be considered among Hollywood’s best-dressed.
Now, there is nothing wrong with a good suit! Every prepared man should have one, but that doesn’t mean they should lack style. Black Hollywood’s best have ushered in a new era of suits with flare. Whether they are adding pops of color, new jacket structures, or prints and designs, they are calling attention to suits with taste.
Additionally, Black men have been exploring fashion and stepping outside the box. Fashion has always been a place for people to push boundaries, but men’s fashion has not always had that luxury — until the 2010s and beyond. Along with modernized suits, celebrities have been forming their own personal styles.
Here are five Black men topping the list of Hollywood’s best-dressed!
1. Colman Domingo
Colman Domingo has been vital in transforming how suits are worn on the red carpet. His attention to detail often elevates a suit from Sunday Best to Best Dressed. At the 2024 Academy Awards, Domingo sported a Louis Vuitton double-breasted tuxedo with’ 70s-style flared bottoms. The gold-tipped cowboy boots were the perfect addition.
Even when the actor is not on the red carpet, he dresses to the nines. Domingo modernized an ’80s Miami Vice structured suit with a subtle, casual vibe. The simple white tank top reveals his physique and transforms the outfit.
2. Tyler James Williams
Today’s young adults practically grew up with Tyler James Williams as he starred as Chris in “Everybody Hates Chris.” Now, he is all grown up, and so is his personal style. Williams catches everyone’s attention and is never afraid to rock a flowy or flared pair of pants.
The 31-year-old attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards in a purple stunner. The suit, perfectly tailored for him, is a relatively simple double-breasted jacket design with wide pleated bottoms. The Aimri-designed suit perfectly matched white shoes, and a sheer top was an excellent choice.
3. Kendrick Lamar
Often sporting dark and baggy clothing, Kendrick Lamar has created his own lane for fashion. The highly acclaimed rapper has remained out of the public eye during his career, but he makes a fashion statement when he pops out.
At the 2024 Grammy Awards, Lamar made his own version of a suit. He paired it with a windbreaker jacket to provide the essentials for a suit. He added a button-down shirt and a tie to complete the suit. The rapper topped it off with a blue fitted cap.
The father of two had the honor of performing at the 2022 Super Bowl and shut the stage down in a custom Louis Vuitton suit. The added gold jewelry was just enough and in tune with Lamar’s personal style.
4. Skepta
Skepta, the king of long coats, has been everyone’s eye candy since his debut in 2007. The British rapper has elevated his style over time, often sporting a long trench coat instead of a typical suit jacket. At six feet tall, the coats are an excellent choice.
5. Shai Gilgeous Alexander
Considered an innovator in men’s fashion, basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has shaped the industry. Although his 6’6″ stature may present an issue when looking for clothes, the Oklahoma City player is not afraid to take fashion risks.
The basketball player’s style was first noticed during his 2023 appearance at the MET Gala. Dressed in Thom Browne, Gilgeous-Alexander stood out amongst the basic Black suits. The outfit appears to pay homage to Chanel’s famous tweed suits. This is the perfect selection as 2023’s MET Gala honored Karl Lagerfeld, who transformed Chanel during his time there.
These Black men in Hollywood have continuously elevated their style, making them easily identifiable on red carpets. They are pioneers, as they inspire young men’s fashion choices everywhere.
