Pull out your cookout playlist and trusty grills because Juneteenth is upon us! Although it only became a national holiday in June 2021, Juneteenth has been celebrated by the Black community for centuries. As the holiday becomes widely recognized, more people are curating ways to celebrate Juneteenth and bring honor to their ancestors.
The celebration of Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, which was the day that enslaved Black Texans found out that the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery. Unfortunately, slavery had been abolished for over two years by the time they were informed. However, this did not stop Black people from finding a way to celebrate their newfound freedom.
Since 1865, Juneteenth has remained one of the only celebrations of the emancipation of enslaved people. Black people across the country have used the holiday to remember all that our ancestors sacrificed. It is also a day to assess the progress yet to be made. If you are unsure of how to observe impactfully, we’ve got you covered! Here are five ways to celebrate Juneteenth!
1. Visit a Black history museum.
One of the best ways to commemorate Juneteenth is to learn more about Black history. Several African-American museums across the country display Black people’s plight throughout history, featuring various African-American exhibits and interactive experiences. If there is no museum with Black history near you, consider purchasing a book that focuses on Black history events.
2. Donate to Black progress organizations.
Although we have come a long way since 1865, there is still progress to be made in society. One of the best ways to honor enslaved people is to help continue the fight for true Black liberation. Find a Black-led organization that shares your same values. After doing so, donate your time or money! Be sure to do your research to ensure it is a legitimate organization.
3. Purchase from Black-owned businesses.
Much like Black History Month, Juneteenth is an excellent time to seek out Black-owned businesses. Although many businesses and companies will provide goods and services related to the holiday, supporting those in the community is best. Not only will this further their business goals, but it will also aid in the community’s progress.
4. Cook something culturally significant.
It may seem a little too simple, but cooking a cultural dish is one of the most impactful ways to celebrate Juneteenth. Whether it’s soul food, butter pecan ice cream, or “Black people” tacos, find something that you love and has significant meaning to the Black community. This is an excellent way to get back in touch with your roots and celebrate your Blackness.
5. Attend a Juneteenth event.
Attending a local Juneteenth event is an excellent option for Black people and anyone who considers themselves an ally. These events commemorate the holiday and typically showcase Black-owned businesses and history. It’s also a great time to talk with business owners to see how you can support them in providing resources to the community.
Although Juneteenth represents a day of joy and celebration, it is vital to remember the tragedy behind it. Enslavers purposefully failed to inform enslaved Black people of their freedom for their own personal and financial gain. However, Black people still rejoiced in happiness and will continue to do so.
