In 1993, Michael Jackson transformed the standard for Super Bowl halftime show performances. Since then, Black celebrities like Beyoncé, Usher, and Rihanna have given iconic performances. Every year, fans debate who would top the last. Although we have seen some great acts, there are so many other Black entertainers who should perform at the Super Bowl.
In 2019, the NFL and Roc Nation agreed to a partnership deal to address social justice. The deal includes many details, such as allowing Roc Nation founder, Jay-Z, to recommend acts for NFL music performances. Although it was controversial for several reasons, the NFL Super Bowl performances have been noticeably Blackity-Black since its implementation.
After Usher handled business onstage for the 2024 Super Bowl halftime, we started thinking about other iconic Black performers who could make a statement. Here are five Black entertainers who should perform for Super Bowl halftime shows next!
1. Ciara
Debuting in the early 2000s, Ciara’s career spans over 20 years. She has released several hits that we could not get enough of during this time. Ciara is also a fantastic dancer, which matches her pop and R&B style. The 38-year-old has blown audiences away with her complex dance routines and sexy demeanor. She would indeed put on one of the best halftime performances. Â
2. SZA
After SZA’s fantastic run in 2023, she is next on the list! SZA’s versatility allows her to step outside the box with her stage performances. In fact, SZA’s performance with Doja Cat at the 2022 Grammy Awards was quite the crowd-pleaser.
Her 2023 “SOS” arena tour was sold out, with many fans loving the set. The singer can captivate audiences with her lyrics, showing the softer side of pop stardom. Fans will indeed tune in to watch.
3. Drake
In 2022, several highly respected hip-hop artists took to the Super Bowl halftime stage, but hip-hop was absent from the program before then. To serve the hip-hop genre its justice, it’s only fitting that a rapper of Drake’s caliber take the stage.
Since his debut in 2009, the Canadian MC has been on top of his game. He has several albums and hits to choose from, possibly making it the most versatile act that may ever perform. The rapper could also bring some of our other favorites, like 21 Savage, Lil’ Wayne, Sexyy Red, SZA, and Future.
4. Megan Thee Stallion
Although hip-hop acts have hit the Super Bowl halftime stage, a female rapper has yet to be appointed. When the time comes, we vote for Megan Thee Stallion! The “Hot Girl Summer” rapper has delivered many fantastic stage performances. Known as one the best to do it in her category, she has the bars, the look, the dance moves, and the stamina.
If Meg were to perform, it would also be the perfect opportunity to honor other female rappers. Imagine a set with Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and Big Latto. It would be nothing short of amazing.
5. Burna Boy
At the start of the 2020s, the Afrobeat genre became more internationally popular. Along with others, this success of the genre is mainly attributed to Nigerian singer Burna Boy. Known for hits like “Sittin’ On Top of The World,” “Like to Party,” and “Follow Me,” the 32-year-old would bring a fresh perspective to culture and how Americans view African countries.
In addition, the singer could have fellow Afrobeats artists — from WizKid to Davido — join him to rock the crowd.
Many artists can put on a fantastic show, but there is something about when a Black artist takes the stage! Black audiences feel seen and celebrated as musicians they love, showcase their artistry to the world.
