It’s been an exciting year for Black culture, with monumental achievements and recognition in various domains. From the increased representation of Black excellence in media to the significant rise of Black-owned businesses, there’s no shortage of milestones to celebrate.
As we build on these positive strides, another significant day is almost upon us: Juneteenth. Celebrated on June 19th, this day commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865. In addition, it serves as an opportunity to honor the progress and resilience of the Black community.
“Every Black person you meet is a MIRACLE. We are descendants of lineages meant to be destroyed by slavery or colonization. Our lives are hard-fought and hard-earned.
We are priceless. We are valuable because of our humanity – and declared valuable because our ancestors declared our worth when they fought for us to live.” – Brittany Packnett Cunningham
To help you make the most of this important holiday, we’ve compiled a list of ways you can commemorate Juneteenth. From festivals to intimate family activities, here are seven Juneteenth events that will usher in feelings of Black liberation, pride, and joy.
1. Juneteenth Cultural Festival
Immerse yourself in a cultural extravaganza featuring music, dance, art, and food from local Black artists and chefs. Festivals are an excellent opportunity to support and enjoy Black talent from the community.
2. Virtual Historical Tour
For our MEFeater introverts, you can participate in an online tour that delves into the rich history of Juneteenth and the broader struggles for freedom and equality. This tour is perfect for those who want to learn more from the comfort of their home.
3. Juneteenth Art Exhibit
Visit a local gallery featuring artwork that explores themes of freedom, resilience, and Black identity. Exhibits provide a profound look at the struggles and triumphs of the African American experience.
4. Community BBQ or Cookout
Share a meal and stories with neighbors at a local park. These gatherings are a wonderful way to connect with others and enjoy delicious food. You can even look up old recipes and bring them along for a taste of history.
5. Juneteenth Children’s Story/Craft Sessions
Check with stores or your local library to see if there are any special Juneteenth-themed story sessions or crafting activities. You can also research Juneteenth crafts and host a family park day or an at-home creative session. This is a perfect option for those with young children to learn and create together.
6. Movie Night
Why not spend some time alone or with loved ones watching Black excellence in film? The top must-watch Juneteenth movie on our list is “Miss Juneteenth,” which is inspired by the holiday. However, “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” “Civil: Ben Crump,” and “The Color Purple” are great for exploring the Black experience.
While there are plenty of Juneteenth events to check out, giving the priceless gift of support is also essential. Support non-profits like the NAACP, The Bail Project, or local community centers that support inclusivity. You can also make a pledge to an organization that uplifts Black voices and resonates with your own beliefs. Additionally, shopping at Black-owned businesses strengthens economic empowerment and fosters community resilience and unity.
So, mark your calendars and start planning now. Regardless of where you live, finding at least a few of these events in your city shouldn’t be hard! No matter what you choose, you can’t go wrong with celebrating Juneteenth in a memorable and meaningful way.
