Netflix has officially greenlit a pilot for a sequel to the iconic 1987 sitcom, A Different World. This new series will center on Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she embarks on her own journey at a historically Black college or university (HBCU).

The original A Different World was a groundbreaking series that delved into the lives of Black students at Hillman College, tackling pressing social issues such as police brutality, gun violence, and HIV/AIDS. Its authentic portrayal resonated with audiences and left a lasting legacy.
Behind the Scenes
Felicia Pride, known for her work on Bel-Air and Grey’s Anatomy, will serve as the writer and executive producer for the sequel. Debbie Allen, a producer of the original series, is set to return to direct the pilot. Other executive producers include Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood.
A Rare Move by Netflix
