Growing up in an Egyptian household, there was a constant emphasis on whiteness. My family still talks about how pink my sister was when she was born – not sure why that’s still relevant 20+ years later. While me, the darker sister, is made to “feel better” that I’m not darker than my darker cousins. It’s a never-ending cycle that is caused by one culprit: anti-blackness.
Most people from many countries internally colonized to thinking that the definition of beauty is pale skin and western features. While putting down dark skin and their native features. People get influenced to change their looks into what they view as beautiful and look towards skin bleaching.
Whether it be creams, masks, or good old bleach, people all over the world use products to try to become lighter. Many times these products cause skin cancer, premature aging, discoloration, and infection. All these risks for the sake of………beauty?
Why do you think this is still a thing? What is it going to take for people to believe that brown and black is beautiful? Let us know what you think in the comments!
