If anyone is worthy of the word icon it’s Tyler Perry. The multi hyphenate mogul will be presented with the Ultimate Icon Award during the 2019 BET awards.
The New Orleans native will be recognized for his success and cultural impact in the entertainment industry. Coming from an abusive home, Perry decided to transform his thoughts and life experiences and turn them into something more. He brought to life the character of Madea, a loud mouthed, gun toting grandma who he has portrayed in various stage productions, and in the Madea movie franchise.
The playwright started his career in 2005 with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” and has since gone on to create numerous successful films and TV series including, “House of Payne” and “The Have and Have Nots.” Perry’s works have always contained a strong spiritual message and humor.
The mogul has recently ended the Madea film series with “A Madea Family Funeral,” marking his last appearance as the on-screen character.
Actress and comedienne Regina Hall is set to host the ceremony, which will air live on Sunday June 23 at 8 p.m.
