Octavia Spencer will portray the iconic Madam C.J. Walker in Netflix limited series. The announcement was made on Sunday at the streamer’s Television Critics Assn. tour session.
The king of the court, Lebron James, will produce the series alongside Spencer.
The eight-episode series will tell the story of how Walker, a hair care mogul, overcame racial tension as well as personal hardships to become America’s first Black self-made millionaire.
According to Variety A’ Leila Bundles, Walker’s great-great-granddaughter whose book On Our Own Our Ground, will also serve as a consultant on the show.
Walker was born Sarah Breedlove to the daughter of slaves in Louisiana, 1867. She was orphaned at age 7, married at age 14 and widowed at age 20. Sources say that Walker reportedly made the decision to start a hair care line after experiencing hair loss in the 1890s. With the help of her third husband she came up with creative advertisements and had women selling her products to other women.
Kasi Lemmons will direct and executive produce the pilot and Nicole Asher will write.
