The economy, crushing student debt, and technology are all deciding factors in our lives. Fifteen companies have taken the opportunity to eliminate the requirement of a college degree when applying to positions at their company.
The companies including Google, Apple, Starbucks, Costco, and Bank of America have started to care more about the hands-on experience than just strictly degrees. In an era where Coding Boot Camps exist, this would make sense especially for tech companies like Google. Potential employees could have gained experience through virtual training and certifications that are usually less expensive and occur over significantly shorter periods of time than the traditional 4 year Bachelor’s Degree.
For non-tech companies like Publix, Costco, and Whole Foods who have also eliminated the degree requirement, the hands-on experience does make sense. There is also the factor of minimizing the costs employees would have to carry in terms of student loan debt. In other words, employees with no student loans can use more of their (small) income on other things. Which some argue could help boost the economy.
While these 15 companies have eliminated the need for degrees, degrees are still a step in the door for the people who wouldn’t have a shot otherwise. Don’t give up on getting your degree just yet!
