Essence describes Elliot as “a consummate visionary whose creativity knows no limits” and as someone who “has continuously pushed the boundaries in her work to shift the culture for the better across multiple industries including music, dance, fashion, film, television and art,” making it no surprise why she was chosen to be honored this year.
Previous recipients of Essence‘s Black Women in Music honor, first established in 2010, include singer-songwriter Erykah Badu, music industry veteran Sylvia Rhone, Golden Globe winer Mary J. Blige and R&B legend Kelly Rowland.
Missy Elliott will receive the honor on Jan. 25 at the Highline Ballroom in New York City.
