Inglewood, California native, D Smoke has finally dropped the visuals for Lights On featuring SiR, from his latest project ‘Black Habit‘. Best known for winning Netflix Rap competition show, Rythm and Flow, the bilingual rapper continues to keep his fans fully fed with the new visuals. The video directed by Jack Begert of Psycho Films showcases the true grittiness of most strip clubs. A story and reality rarely told due to the more common over-sensationalized tropes of big booties and glam.
The lead is played by HBO’s Insecure, Issa Rae which ties in for an unexpected thrill ride. She plays an exotic dancer who holds up the strip club owner, played by Danny Trejo. There is a level of excitement watching Issa Rae frantically move through a strip club in reverse chronology. It creates thrill and anticipation as we watch Issa engulfed in a new light while being the boss that she is. Lights On displays an interesting parallel as Issa’s customers are her accomplices ( D Smoke & SiR) aligning with the overall theme of the track.
In a statement, D Smoke said “we wanted to tell a story without bias, that simply shows a series of events, tied to an empowered woman, played by Issa Rae, who takes what she wants and is willing to face the consequences that result.” Watch below as Issa get her ends.
