Honey Bxby & “3 Words, 8 Letters”
Scrolling through Instagram and weaving through new artists is a new pastime many people have developed. More women have emerged from the shadows with approaches to creativity that captivate listeners and viewers. When Honey Bxby appeared on our screens, it was immediately evident that she possessed undeniable talent. Her vocal style channeled the spirit of artists like Kehlani, and an unintentional but striking similarity to Keyshia Cole added to her allure. However, it’s not just her vocal prowess that sets her apart; her songwriting skills shine as a testament to her creativity. Honey Bxby attributes her lyrical prowess to her study of artists like Drake and Alicia Keys. “I take my time when I write, making voice memos to capture every flow. My laptop is filled with videos documenting my writing process,” shared Honey Bxby.
Honey Bxby released her EP, “3 Words, 8 Letters,” on June 8th, the day she also announced her signing to Rebirth / ART@WAR / Atlantic Records. The EP contains 10 tracks and runs for 19 minutes. She promoted the album with lead singles “Trouble,” “Touchin,” and “Get Your Lick Back” with visuals for each. “3 words, 8 letters stand for ‘I hate you, I love you’ because the EP goes from empowerment to revenge. It’s a variety of feelings,” Honey said.
Honey’s very first live performance was well-received at William Paterson University’s SGA Annual Award Show, where she performed “Touchin,” and “Trouble.”She was featured on the cover of Pandora’s “Top Shelf R&B” playlist. And “Trouble” was featured as a “Sleeper Pick” on Episode 609 of the Joe Budden podcast. “The process of making the EP was fun, two of the songs on the EP I wrote before I was even discovered, I think it’s dope it made it on there! The whole EP definitely gives women empowerment, we’re not playing around with these men no more,” Honey said.
About Honey Bxby
The New Jersey native started honing her musical talents at an early age. As a child, she made music with her father, singing the songs he would write. This process is common among the greatest stars of our time, like Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, and Selena, who all worked with their father early in their careers.
Like all those artists, Honey Bxby used her personal experience to bring this project to fruition. “The energy and mood for this project come from my last relationship. I’ve just become this person who no longer wants to tolerate or deal with people who don’t deserve me,” Honey said.
In contrast to legendary artists from previous generations, the modern age of music, media, and technology has created a pipeline for artists, sending them straight to online platforms like YouTube to share their art. Honey Bxby is part of the YouTube generation; she dropped her first song in 2019 while she was in cosmetology school.
Oddly enough, she had her breakthrough while she was on hiatus working as an exotic dancer. She is living proof of the saying that what you want the most comes when you least expect it! She was discovered through Instagram, a social media weapon Honey Bxby continues to harness and bend to her will with 30K+ followers and 400K+ impressions across key platforms.
Since she popped off, Honey has used Instagram as a personal journaling space while encouraging her fans to be their most authentic selves. She provides more transparency about her life by taking an autobiographical approach to her music and writing. “When I did “Trouble,” it was like, we need one of those songs. I was still stripping, living in a 500-square-foot apartment, and I was on a hiatus. I was writing off the idea of niggas not being sh*t,” she said.
Uniqueness is what Honey has relied on to catapult her career to new heights. She draws inspiration from Kehlani’s brand of authenticity. “There’s no one out like Kehlani right now; she’s in her own lane,” she said. Honey is not far from creating her lane of artistry and success because she continues to combine her inspirations to make distinctive sounds and nostalgic vibes.
