Flau’jae Johnson first popped into the spotlight during the 2023 National Women’s College Basketball Championship. As a freshman at Louisana State University, the multi-hyphenate proved to be a force to be reckoned with on the court. As she grew a following, Johnson also became known for her rap skills. Now, she continues pursuing both careers, as Johnson’s debut album, “Best Of Both Worlds,” is available to stream.
The LSU basketball player released the highly anticipated project on June 28, 2024. Although this is her first album, the now 20-year-old has been pursuing a career in hip-hop since 2019. According to Complex, the rapper has released several projects and was signed to Roc Nation in 2024.
Who can listeners expect to hear on Flau’jae’s new album?
For her debut album, Johnson pulled out some certified heavy hitters. The project contains nine songs with features from NLE Choppa, 2Rare, and Lil Wayne. Two singles from the album have already been released, “AMF” and “Came Out a Beast,” featuring hip-hop legend Lil Wayne.
As expected, fans are most excited to hear Wayne’s verse on the album. The song was released as a single on the same day as the album and will hopefully have an accompanying video.
The 20-year-old is extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with Lil Wayne. She stated that rapping alongside him forced her to work harder.
“Working with Lil Wayne on ‘Came Out a Beast’ was a surreal experience,” the rapstress told Complex. “His energy and talent pushed me to new heights.”
Flau’jae used the song as an opportunity to honor her hard work and how far it has taken her. She also spoke about only being in competition with herself and how she is focused on her future.
“They tryna be funny, I’m tryna get money/I guess in the end, I’ma see you later,” she rapped. “At the top, I’m not lookin’ beneath/You my dog, we don’t gotta compete.”
Lil Wayne followed Flau’jae’s flow and rapped about similar themes. The rapper shared bars about his came-up and the results of his hard work in the music industry.
“Chain big ballin’, diamonds be talkin’/Diamonds be sparklin’ like Coach Mulkey,” he rapped.
Will Flau’jae Johnson continue to play basketball?
“Best of Both Worlds” is a fitting title for Flau’jae’s new album, as she is one of few rappers who also plays college basketball. Although her education comes first, the femcee enjoys working in both fields. She stated that she doesn’t necessarily need to choose between basketball and music.
“I’ve loved combining my two talents,” Johnson told Complex. “‘Best of Both Worlds‘ shows you don’t have to choose one path — you can excel in multiple arenas.
In 2023, ESPN reported that the baller was inspired to pursue a rap career after her father, Jason Johnson, aka Camoflauge, passed away before she was born. Although she never met him, she was connected to him thanks to her mother, Kia, and her yearly celebrations of him. At the tender age of 8, Flau’jae began writing songs and performing.
The rapper and basketball player shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. As she enters her third year of women’s basketball at LSU, she is focused on her passion for sports and continuing her father’s legacy in hip-hop.
“This project reflects who I am — a basketball player, a rapper, and someone who refuses to be put in a box,” Johnson told Complex. “I hope my fans can feel the passion and dedication I’ve poured into every song,”
Flau’jae’s new album is available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify.
