In 2020, at the height of election season and with the racial awakening on everyone’s mind, two Black women deeply involved in politics found themselves searching for political news outlets and podcasts that reflected them and the issues directly affecting their communities. Finding few, they started Black Girls Do Politics, a nonprofit organization that provides trusted, authentic news and political information for Black women, as well as a fellowship program and volunteer opportunities. With disinformation targeted toward Black women and Black communities in particular, Black Girls Do Politics offers credible sources for news around issues directly affecting BIPOC communities. They also create opportunities for Black women to become more involved in politics and social justice through careers outside of running for office, such as media, fundraising, operations, and more.
Black Girls Do Politics Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Alexis Buchanan Thomas, is an independent journalist who has produced political news shows for WRFG community radio station and served as a news wire writer for Nonprofit Quarterly Review. She advocates for social justice causes by raising funds and resources, having raised over a hundred million dollars for various nonprofits throughout her career.
