If we have retained anything from the last couple of years, it’s the ability to adapt – adapt to the curveballs of life, like unexpected music and early releases. To add to her list of records to play at the outdoor functions like “Before I Let Go” and “Party”, Beyoncé soundtracks resilience and champions love on “Break my Soul”. In the first listen to what this seventh album may bring, our Houston royalty is letting her hair down. And we hear that musically, using her tried and true talents that have garnered her continued success but still finding the space and equipment to experiment with new sounds.
This single is track number 6 on her puzzling yet highly anticipated upcoming work, “act i: RENAISSANCE”. If her British Vogue photoshoot was any indicator of what sounds to expect, perched on a disco ball in pink platform boots, Bey prepared us for “Break My Soul”. In their interview, Edward Enninful called this “her most ambitious musical project to date”, created and recreated during the pandemic.
AND WE BACK OUTSIDE/ YOU SAID YOU OUTSIDE BUT YOU AIN’T THAT OUTSIDE/ WORLDWIDE HOODIE WITH THE MASK OUTSIDE/ IN CASE YOU FORGOT HOW WE ACT OUTSIDEBeyoncé “Break My Soul”
This Summer is Set on the Dance Floor
Marrying New Orleans bounce and club music, Bey has arrived on “Break My Soul”. The beat lends itself to Robin S’s 1993 hit, “Show Me Love”. We hear a frequent collaborator, Big Freedia on the track, as well as Beyoncé’s signature harmonies in the background. The re-emergence of house music is just in time for summer and seems like a necessary reward. Whether that stress is from the grasp of capitalism, or soured relationships, “Break My Soul” defiantly lets it go and yearns for the freedom we all crave as we start to peek our heads outside of a global pandemic. The dance-inducing record is exactly what we need. A summer of uninhibited dancing and celebrating life as we try and mimic Beyoncé’s powerful vocals and resonating lyrics reminding the universe that whatever it throws our way we can dodge, hit back, or take the blow.
