Marrying New Orleans bounce and club music, Bey has arrived on “Break My Soul”. The beat lends itself to Robin S’s 1993 hit, “Show Me Love”. We hear a frequent collaborator, Big Freedia on the track, as well as Beyoncé’s signature harmonies in the background. The re-emergence of house music is just in time for summer and seems like a necessary reward. Whether that stress is from the grasp of capitalism, or soured relationships, “Break My Soul” defiantly lets it go and yearns for the freedom we all crave as we start to peek our heads outside of a global pandemic. The dance-inducing record is exactly what we need. A summer of uninhibited dancing and celebrating life as we try and mimic Beyoncé’s powerful vocals and resonating lyrics reminding the universe that whatever it throws our way we can dodge, hit back, or take the blow.
