The Grammys have been delivering memorable red-carpet fashion for decades. There is never a lack of interesting red-carpet moments between the night’s numerous performances and the exhilaration of the night’s wins. The evening usually has a variety of standout outfits, and our favorites are always styled to the max in hopes of being the evening’s showstoppers. From Cher, JLo, and Rihanna, we have seen the most surprising, breathtaking, and memorable looks in Grammy history. Ahead of this year’s award show ceremony, we’re looking back at all the most iconic Grammy looks.
Cher (1974)
Giving us a classic Cher moment, the singer donned a white bikini-style top adorned with a sequin butterfly. Topping off the look, she wore a matching pastel butterfly accessory in her hair and a sheer shawl. This was 1974; it’s almost unbelievable.
Grace Jones (1983)
Leave it to Grace Jones to bring avant-garde fashion onto the Grammy scene. The singer shut down the red carpet for the award show’s 25th anniversary in an ultra wide-brim hat (which Rick James posed under) and matching black leather ensemble.
Michael Jackson (1984)
One of MJ’s most iconic looks, the King of Pop showed up to the ’84 Grammy Awards in a bedazzled military jacket and what would become his signature single glove.
En Vogue (1991)
En Vogue showed up to the 1991 Grammy Awards in traditional African looks that brought some much-welcomed color and print to the red carpet that year.
Céline Dion (1993)
In one of the Grammys’ first-ever naked dresses. Céline Dion showed up to the 1993 show in a see-through black lace gown that showed off her black thong.
TLC (1996)
An iconic fashion moment in girl band history, TLC wore matching white silky outfits for their first-ever Grammy appearance, where they swept the awards with four wins.
JLO (2000)
The dress that literally created Google’s image search, Jennifer Lopez’s plunging Versace gown, is one of the most impactful red carpet looks of all time. At the time, the belly-button-baring look was one of the most scandalous gowns to grace a red carpet, and it remains one of the most iconic to this day.
Toni Braxton (2001)
Out-naked-ing J.Lo’s iconic Versace dress, Toni Braxton dropped jaws in this barely-there silk gown.
Missy Elliott (2003)
If there was ever a way to sum up early 2000s style, Missy Elliott wearing a pink tracksuit and matching fuzzy hat on the red carpet was it.
Lady Gaga (2010)
This wouldn’t be an iconic Grammys list without Lady Gaga. The singer went for an unconventional celestial red carpet look at the 2010 Grammys. She wore a sculptural, space-like, custom Armani Privé look and bejeweled platform heels.
Nicki Minaj (2012)
At the 2012 Grammy Awards, Nicki Minaj took her theme of “Roman Holiday” quite seriously, showing up in this red Versace look with a pope right beside her. It was a holy evening for Minaj, and certainly one that went down in history as one of her most outrageous and memorable looks.Â
Rihanna (2013)
Rihanna was a vision in this sheer red gown by Azzedine Alaïa.
Pharell (2014)
The hat sparked a million memes. Pharrell’s risk-taking accessory at the 2014 Grammys is one that will go down in Grammy history.
Beyonce (2014)
Queen Bey gave us a naked dress moment of her own in this sheer white floral gown by Michael Costello.
Rihanna (2015)
Go big or go home: Rihanna wore a swoon-worthy princess gown by Giambattista Valli Couture to the 2015 Grammys. This dress sparked a ton of memes in the process.
Rihanna (2017)
Rihanna lit the red carpet on fire when she stepped out in this two-piece Armani Privé look with Chopard jewelry.
Cardi B (2019)
Cardi stole the red carpet spotlight at the 2019 Grammy Awards. She took viewers by surprise when she showed up in this oyster/pearl/clam-inspired dress. While it might not be a dress for everyone, it’s certainly a look to be remembered!
Billie Eilish (2020)
Billie Eilish never fails to translate her personal style for the red carpet. This custom-encrusted Gucci suit is a case in point.
Harry Styles (2021)
Harry Styles continues to push the boundaries in men’s fashion. His yellow plaid moment combined with a purple feather boa scarf was no exception.
Beyonce (2021)
Beyoncé brought elegance and boldness to what became her history-making moment at the 2021 Grammys with this black leather off-the-shoulder number by Schiaparelli.
Justin & Hailey Bieber (2022)
Justin Bieber wore a Balenciaga gray suit that was several sizes too big for him. He teamed it with a white tank top, platform Crocs, and a pink beanie. His wife, Hailey Bieber, donned a Saint Laurent gown, perhaps the most outrageous look from Justin’s Grammy red carpet ever!
The 65th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 5, 2023. We can’t help but wonder what this year has in store for us on the red carpet. Are we going to be shocked or stunned?
