The year has only just begun but the crème de la crème in the television industry have already set the tone. The 80th Golden Globe Awards honored the best in film and American television of 2022, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The world’s top ten most prestigious high society ceremony was held on Tuesday night, January 11th at The Beverly Hilton in California. It aired live in the United States on NBC and streamed on Peacock. The Award ceremony, however, is just the aftermath. What everyone looks forward to is the stars and their red-carpet moments which in recent years have proven rather underwhelming.
Best Moments
It’s no secret that one specific Law Roach muse is undisputedly the queen of the red carpet or grey carpet in this case. So when Zendaya posted on her Instagram that she’d be skipping the 2023 Golden Globes, it was quite interesting to predict who’d carry the red carpet. However, there were some eligible trophy takers, and Iconic attendees to make the evening noteworthy! One of the most notable guests is Rihanna.
Rihanna’s Presence
The Super Bowl halftime 2023 performer attended the first high society ceremony of 2023 to celebrate her song “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The marvel soundtrack was nominated for an award but did not win. However, Rihanna still showed up (as usual) with eyes on her major fashion moment. She wore a dramatic black gown by Schiaparelli Couture, and her boyfriend A$AP Rocky joined her in a black suit. The two snuck in during the ceremony after the red carpet had ended.
MJ Rodriguez Standing Ovation
Michaela Jaé (MJ) Rodriguez made history at the 2022 Golden Globe after winning Best Actress in a TV drama, following her fan-favorite role as Blanca in the famous FX show Pose. But it wasn’t until a year later that the 32-year-old star received a standing ovation not only for the win but because she also became the first transgender actor to win a Golden Globe Award.
When Rodriguez won for her character in the FX series, co-created by Ryan Murphy, the show was in turmoil and was not televised. Therefore, when Murphy accepted the Carol Burnett Award for achievement in TV, he took a moment to recognize MJ and asked the audience to honor Rodriguez with a standing ovation.
Best Dressed
Michaela Jaé Rodriguez
Michaela Jaé Rodriguez takes the best dressed for this year’s Golden Globes. MJ stunned in a Balmain royal blue ensemble. The draped dress with a bow and a slit design complements their body with an off-shoulder neckline/bow that enhances the bust area. The whole cut of this dress screams golden globes, but the color really takes it to the top. Rodriguez paired the dress with some Pomellato jewels and mustard metallic Louboutin heels. This look was styled by Wayman Deon and Micah Mcdonald.
Billy Porter
There’s hardly ever a miss from Billy Porter! The Actor and director swept the grey carpet with a 2023’s color of the year Magenta custom dress suit ensemble by Christian Siriano. Billy paired this with a Tiziano Colasante clutch and some accessories by House of Emmanuele and Shine Like Me Brand. The whole look was styled by Tytryone and Colin Anderson.
Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain really put some thought into her dress. Not only is it flattering, but it’s quite artistic and super suitable for the event. She wore a custom Oscar DeLaRanta dress and paired it with gold heels and some minimal accessories. Chastain was styled by Elizabeth Stewart who also happened to be Viola Davis’s stylist for the 2023 Golden Globes.
Angela Bassett
Angela Bassett can do no wrong in all our eyes! Apart from slaying almost every red carpet, the 64-year-old actress is aging quite gracefully. Miss Bassett was the epitome of Hollywood glam at the 2023 Golden Globes and boy did he take on Hollywood. She made history by winning a Golden Globe Award for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever becoming the first actor to win a major award for a Marvel movie. Angela looked stunning in a Pamella Roland sequin dress paired with a clutch. The look was styled by Jenniffer Austin.
Viola Davis
Now let’s just excuse the wet hem on Miss Davi’s dress because she killed this look. The royal blue color on her skin completes everything. Viola Davis looked elegant in a custom Jason Wu dress, styled by Elizabeth Stewart.
Regina Hall
The thought on everyone’s mind is leather does not work for the red carpet, and while this may be true because it’s quite unconventional, we have t agree that Regina made it work! The actress wore a Monique L Huillier Fall 2023 Vegan leather dress with one shoulder draped down and matching custom gloves and a clutch to match. The look was styled by Alison Edmond.
With 2023 only just beginning it’s amazing that the Golden Globes has already gotten us into the spirit of award shows and high society events. Hopefully, it is a better year for fashion, representation, and recognition.
