Author and creator of the wildly popular book/film series To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Jenny Han, is back to make us swoon with yet another love story. Her book series The Summer I Turned Pretty was recently adapted into Amazon Prime’s latest series, and has fans falling in love with everything from the top tier music choices to the romance. The Summer I Turned Pretty, which has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its premiere, has become our newest obsession since To All the Boy’s I’ve Loved Before.
This coming of age story follows 16-year-old Belly, played by Lola Tung. She tries to navigate a love triangle between the Fisher brothers, Jeremiah and Conrad. As well as the many life changing events that happen to her and the people around her. In the series, Belly and her family gear up for another summer at their family friend’s beach house in the fictional town of Cousins. Cousins Beach is a familiar and magical place for Belly, as her mother Laurel has been taking Belly and her brother to her best friend Susannah’s beach house since they were kids. Although when they arrive, the newly beautiful Belly realizes that this summer will be different from the rest, as she soon finds herself juggling multiple guys trying to figure out which love is the right love for her.
The Brothers
Conrad Fisher
Belly has been in love with Conrad Fisher, played by Christopher Briney, since she was 10-years-old. He is eldest son of Susannah and the oldest of all the kids. He is quiet and known to push away those closest to him in order to seal off his emotions. He is not quite sure of his feelings for Belly, mostly seeing her as kid until now. This summer he comes off as hot and cold, standoffish. And unlike the Conrad those closest to him know him as. His relationship with Belly and the rest of his family goes through various changes this summer as he is hiding a huge secret.
Jeremiah Fisher
Unlike his brother Conrad, Jeremiah played by Gavin Casalegno, is known as the more fun and outgoing brother. In the movie he is bisexual, calling himself an ‘equal opportunity flirter’. He is one of Belly’s best friends, but starts to see her as something more as the summer progresses. Jeremiah is Conrad’s polar opposite as he is more not afraid to speak his mind. His outgoing personality has made him ‘The Golden Boy’ of Cousins.
The Mothers
Aside from the love triangle consisting of Belly and the Fisher brothers, the real love story in the series is that of the mothers. Laurel and Susannah are played by Jackie Chung and Rachel Blanchard. The two women have been best friends for most of their lives and have seen each other through thick and thin. Their summers together at Susannah’s beach house with their children are sacred. The series puts their friendship to the test as they try to navigate a huge change in their lives. The series shows the beauty in sticking with a friend through good and bad times.
The Summer I Turned Pretty stole our hearts, and is definitely MEF approved. So if you haven’t, do yourself a favor and get lost this weekend in this coming of age romantic drama full of love, friendship, and heartbreak.
