After 12 years at ABC, ‘Scandal’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ mastermind Shonda Rhimes is leaving the network after inking a multi-year deal with Netflix.
The industry-shaking partnership, announced Sunday night, will see Rhimes bringing her powerhouse production company Shondaland to Netflix, where Rhimes and producing partner Betsy Beers will oversee a new series and other projects. Netflix did not disclose financial terms of the deal.
ABC’s still-running Shondaland shows (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder) will remain with the network, as will several upcoming projects in various stages of development, including a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.
Rhimes wrote in a statement that she was grateful to the network for giving her career a start, but she was looking forward to expanding her audience and “creative identity” with Netflix. “Starting today, we are thrilled to begin creating new Shondaland stories with Netflix,” she wrote.
