You may remember Senator John McCain from the 2008 election. He ran against Barak Obama as the GOP nominee but subsequently lost. He is known, of course, as a Republican, but also for his outspokenness when it comes to foreign policy. A topic that came up often in his critiques of former President Obama.
However, in a recent interview with The Guardian, when asked “if America’s standing on the global stage was better under Barack Obama,” McCain said, “As far as American leadership is concerned, yes.” A shocking submission, and very out of character when it comes to McCain.
As it turns out, McCain later recanted this submission in an interview with The Daily Caller. Saying, “I never said such a thing. A thousand times I said, ‘Look at the world in 2009 and look at it today.’ Of course, I never said [that]. If I did I was joking.” Now we see this back and forth a lot in politics. Maybe he took it back to save face within his party, of which he is a prominent member. But the bottom line is McCain’s initial instinct was that Obama’s leadership was admirable.
