This week’s artists, who hail from the streets of Arkansas, North Carolina, and London, bring a distinct sound to the table, especially for non-mainstream music fans. These artists should be on your radar whether you want to dance, sing your heart out, or simply allow the music to carry you to a happy place.
bLack Party
bLack Party, a singer, songwriter, and producer from Little Rock, Arkansas, is is reviving the silky grooves of the 70s. When bLack Party released his album Mango in 2016, I was captivated by songs like “Summer Love”, “Swang My Way”, and show Me” featuring Kari Faux (a fellow Little Rock rapper). He has a way of making his music come alive with tranquil vibes wrapped around energetic tempos. He effortlessly blends R&B, soul, and house music. bLack Party released Endless Summer in 2019 and it was a huge hit. “Soakin”, a new tune from bLack Party and Gwen Bunn, screams summer house party!
Zilo
Zilo, a soulful London vocalist has a vibrant personality which is reflected in her music. Her song “Don’t Waste My Time” of her album The Nature Of The Beast, is about being selective about who you hang out with and how much energy you give out – a self care must. Her music is based in R&B and soul, and it reflects on experiences that elicit a wide range of emotions in listeners. She is not only a vocalist, but she also writes music with her poetry and creates her own artwork for her album covers. She recently released a new tune called “Company” with Devin Tracy. So, the next time you listen to Zilo (hopefully soon), just let yourself be carried away by her songs.
Mikhala Jenè
After her song “Mad B*tches” was featured on Insecure’s final soundtrack, Mikhala Jenè has gained a lot of traction. Mikhala Jenè, on the other hand, has been around for a while, and the resurrected song “Mad B*tches” from her album Carolina Blues isn’t her only highlight. Singles like “All I Want”, “Ricki Lake”, and “FIGHT FOR YOU” have been released by the Jacksonville, North Carolina native. Her voice is melodious, with hints of soul and gospel thrown in the mix. Whether you’re looking for a ballad, a grown and sexy bop, or a breakup song, Mikhala Jenè has you covered.
So, if you’re looking for a new artist or skimming through your music library, give these great artists a try; you won’t be disappointed.
