It’s been almost two years since the tragic night when Tory Lanez allegedly shot rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. Megan Thee Stallion recently spoke out in her first-ever interview addressing the 2020 shooting with Gayle King for CBS Mornings. Lanez (whose real name is Daystar Peterson) is currently facing charges of felony assault and carrying an unregistered firearm.
The Shooting

Megan recalled to King the tragic events that took place on July 12, 2020. After leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s house, Megan stated an argument broke out in the car between the passengers, Tory Lanez, and her ex-best friend Kelsey Harris. The argument started because Megan was ready to leave and call it a night, but it quickly escalated.
As the argument continued to escalate, Megan tried to leave the car. At this moment, everything quickly changed and the situation went from “friends” in an argument to a violent shooting. Megan recounted to King, that Lanez shouted at her “dance b*tch” before shooting multiple times at her. Megan Thee Stallion recalls being scared, fearing for her life in the hands of Lanez.
“He is standing up over the window shooting. And I didn’t even want to move. I didn’t want to move too quick. I don’t know if he’s gonna shoot something that’s, like, super important. I don’t know if he could shoot me and kill me.”

The Aftermath Of The Shooting
Immediately after the shooting, Megan shockingly revealed that Lanez offered $1 million for them to keep quiet about the assault. Megan shared with King how her fears increased when the police showed up at the scene.

“I was like, Oh my God, we all about to die. The George Floyd incident had just happened. The police are definitely very much ‘shoot first, ask questions after. So I’m like, It’s a hot gun in the car. I’m bleeding. I’ve been shot. They about to kill somebody. Something bad is about to happen.”

Upon arriving at the scene police questioned Megan as to what happened to her bloody foot. Megan told the police that she stepped in broken glass – a lie she concocted to protect her “friends”.
“Even though this person just did this to me, my first reaction still was to try to save us. I didn’t want to see anybody die. I was lying to protect all of us.”

Megan’s false lie highlights the immense fear Black people have towards the police protecting them in high-stakes situations. Sometimes the police can be scarier than the incident occurring. This is why it’s important to believe victims when they come out and tell their side of the story. Megan has gone on to face backlash on social media from skeptics who believe that she lied about being shot. She shares with King that she wishes she had told the truth at the moment but if her lie was the cost of saving everyone’s lives that night then it was meant to be.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Relationship with Her Late Parents
Megan also shared with viewers the emotional bond she shared with her late parents.
“They were my best friends. It was only the three of us all the time.”

Megan revealed to King that when she was younger she experienced bullying from peers about her tall height. It was the advice of her late parents that helped her overcome those insecurities.

It was her parent’s death that brought her close to Tory. Megan states she and Lanez were close friends who bonded over the deaths of their mothers. Once again, she denied Lanez’s claims that the two had a sexual relationship prior to the incident.
Megan Thee Stallion Today

Today, Megan Thee Stallion still lives with the effects of the shooting. A medical report after the shooting detailed that bullet fragments from the gun still remain in Megan’s foot to this day. Megan also revealed to King that ever since the shooting her anxiety has gotten worse. The effects of the shooting have impacted Megan’s ability to trust new people and hold conversations for longer than 30 minutes without almost crying. During these difficult times, Megan wishes she had the guidance of her mother by her side.
When questioned about critics who doubt her story, Megan told King, “I don’t think any of this is for them. It’s for me. I know this happened to me. I’d rather it play out in court and the facts come out. I’m the victim. I’m not defending myself against anything.” The trial between Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez is set to begin on September 14, 2022. If convicted, Lanez could reportedly face up to 22 years in jail for the assault.
