Jonathan Majors sentencing: Actor Avoids Jail with a Probation sentence

Jonathan Major’s sentencing has caused a rift on social media. The actor has gotten off scot-free from an assault case against ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. Here’s all the details: A Manhattan jury convicted actor Jonathan Majors of misdemeanor assault in December after he attacked his ex-girlfriend. He has been sentenced to a year-long treatment program. As part of his sentence, Majors must attend a 52-week in-person batterer’s intervention program (counseling) in Los Angeles, where he presently resides. He will also have to continue with the mental health treatment that he has been receiving.

Last month, Grace Jabbari filed a civil lawsuit against the actor in a federal court in Manhattan. In the suit, Jabbari accuses Majors of assault, battery, slander, and inducing mental distress, stating he subjected her to escalating physical and verbal abuse during their relationship.

Facts To Know About The Case

Why did he only get a conditional discharge sentence?

Judge Michael Gaffey sentenced Majors to conditional discharge given that he was a first-time offender with no prior criminal record, and all parties agreed that the accusations did not deserve jail time. If Majors is found in breach of the terms, he risks spending a year in jail. His release agreement also includes a no-contact restriction with his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.

Victims Statement

Grace Jabbari was allegedly holding back tears in court as she addressed the court. The 31-year-old dancer reportedly said that Majors refuses to acknowledge his guilt and remains a danger to those around him. “He’s not sorry and has not accepted responsibility,” she reportedly said. The dancer also said that Majors made her believe they were in a loving relationship while he isolated her from her loved ones. The two met in 2021 on the set of Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” in which Majors played Kang.

No signs of remorse

Assistant District Attorney Kelli Galloway argued for a sentence of violence counseling for Majors. However, instead of accepting his actions, Majors launched a “high-powered PR campaign” that included a nationally televised interview. Galloway criticized Majors for openly criticizing the court proceedings.

After his final sentencing, Majors reportedly left the courthouse with his girlfriend, Meagan Good, who has been supporting him throughout the case. The actor did not make any statements or speak to reporters. According to reports, his lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, reportedly stated that the actor did not wish to make any public statements that Jabbari may use against him in the civil suit she has filed against him.

Majors, she noted, is “committed to growing as a person and will attend any court-mandated programs with an open heart, despite his innocence and plans to appeal. He’s lost his whole career,” Chaudhry said in court. “This has been the most challenging year of his life,” she noted.

His Career

Marvel Studios dropped Majors in December 2023. He would’ve played the role of Kang the Conqueror, a pivotal role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Majors had previously starred in “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” his breakthrough role. He also received an Emmy nomination for his role in the HBO horror series “Lovecraft Country” and played the antagonist in the blockbuster movie “Creed III.”

Jonathan Major’s sentencing has been a real example of how the law favors abusers at times based on their status. He might have gotten out free, but after such an ordeal, Major’s career is hanging by a thread. It’s unclear whether the actor will be working on any projects as yet.
