With much grace, Jessie Reyez delivers a powerful message in her new music video for her single, ‘Body Count.’ After witnessing it, there is no doubt that she will, as a result, own the rest of the year.
The words ‘Body Count’ already hinting at what this could mean for her.
To begin with, the lyricism is prominent. The songstress touches on a topic that has always had a sort of taboo. As a result, it was only right to visually make ‘Body Count’ a Salem Witch trial video.
It stands as a fact that promiscuity and honesty about sexuality were not to be spoken of. In the video, Reyez’s will to be free with both bring her to her judgment day. Although it shines a light on a dark time in history, the lyrics hold importance on how society reacts to that same freedom today.
‘Body Count’ translating to how many people you’ve slept with, coins a few points. The number often carries importance as a deal-breaker to some. She [Reyez] explains that those are judgments that shouldn’t matter, and this stigma should rest.
As you watch the video and hear her sing, you begin to hope this isn’t another successful Salem Witch Trial.
Unfortunately, it is. The purpose of it standing relevantly. Since she was able to die with her dignity and freedom to allow herself to not be ashamed of her sexuality, or more importantly, her ‘Body Count.’ Watch the video below!
