On May 25, we celebrate Africa Day! ? Africa is known for being a rich continent in areas such as materials, languages, traditions, food, and music. Africa has been a huge inspiration for other cultures and still is today. The new generation of African designers is highlighting their African heritage. Indeed, they all have a common point: They bring a new thing into the fashion industry. Here are 4 talented designers who highlight their African heritage through their wonderful work. Enjoy! ?
1. ANIFA MVUEMBA: FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF HANIFA
The first designer on the list is Anifa Mvuemba! Anifa is a 30-year-old Congolese-American and founder of the fashion brand, Hanifa. Anifa has always been passionate about fashion. She first started in the industry designing clothes for herself. As a result of her talent, she began to receive more orders. Her life went to another level in May 2020, when she launched her collection “Pink Label Congo”. Her 3D virtual show was a moment for the fashion industry because of the digital catwalk and curvy, invisible models.
Hanifa is a feminine, elegant and colorful brand that includes all types of shapes and we love it Celebrities seen wearing Hanifa pieces include Tracee Ellis Ross, Lizzo, and Zendaya. Hanifa even pays tribute to her home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo throughout different pieces. We love to see a Black woman bringing new things to the table and we are here for it! Anifa Mvuemba has definitely left her print in the fashion industry and we celebrate her! ??
2. SARAH DIOUF: FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF TONGORO
Here is Sarah Diouf, a French-Senegalese designer who created, Tongoro in 2016. “Tongoro” means “star” in Sango, a Central African Republic language. Through her brand, Sarah Diouf’s goal is to create a fashion brand 100% made in Africa. In fact, she wanted to create jobs and local productions to show that you can make a successful brand based and made in Africa. For this reason, Tongoro is now a renowned brand that has been featured in a lot of Beyoncé’s projects. You can see some Tongoro pieces in “Spirit” or “Brown Skin Girl” in the Black is King film. Hence, other celebrities have fallen in love with the brand such as Naomi Campbell, Alicia Keys, Iman Bowie, and even Burna Boy.
Tongoro is a feminine brand giving elegant, while being comfortable at the same time! ?
3. NASITA FOFANA : FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF SITA INDINGO
Nasita is the founder of Sita Indigo. The particularity of her brand is the highlight of the indigo. It is a loincloth, which is an ancestral fabric from West Africa (Guinea, Senegal, Mali). Nasita wants to promote the work of African artisans who manufacture the pieces by hand. The fabrics are dyed using an environmentally friendly coloring technique. All items are produced in Africa. Above all, Sita Indigo mixes tradition and modernity, but also Africa and France. From chic to elegant, to casual, there is something for everyone! Sita Indigo offers dresses, jumpsuits, and even skirts! Well done Nasita! ??
4. IBRAHIM FERNANDEZ : FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF IBRAHIM FERNANDEZ
Our last designer on the list is Ibrahim Fernandez. This Ivoirian designer is the founder of the eponym brand, Ibrahim Fernandez. If you are looking for a fresh and colorful brand, you are in luck! Ibrahim is talented and we see it through his clothing line. From the cocktail dress to the jumpsuit, there is a choice for all tastes. Ibrahim’s pieces differ from what we usually see. The cuts are beautifully well thought out and all are made in Africa.
