Black History Month is a time for the diaspora to gather and celebrate. We celebrate activists, entertainers, athletes, and record-breakers during the month. Black History Month is also a time to support Black people in any endeavor, including business. Purchasing from Black-owned businesses and bands amplifies our excellence.
These businesses are vital to our communities and the progression of civil rights. Not to mention, the needs and desires of the Black community form the foundation of Black-owned businesses. As a result, they work to protect and simplify our lifestyles. Here are five Black-owned beauty businesses you need to shop this Black History Month!
1. LYS Beauty (lysbeauty.com)
LYS Beauty is a Black-owned makeup brand. Founded by Tisha Thompson, LYS Beauty is the first Black-owned clean beauty brand sold in Sephora. The brand is highly inclusive, including a vast shade selection, pigmented products, and diverse models. LYS Beauty is also environment-conscious, using sustainably made packaging, per the brand’s website.
LYS Beauty remains true to their origins by curating products for Black women’s faces. Most importantly, Thompson wants to ensure that the brand provides luxury results without customers having to break the bank. All LYS Beauty products are under $30.
2. Topicals (mytopicals.com)
Olamide Olowe founded Topicals in 2020. The brand offers skincare products specializing in people of color and their skin. Topicals’ products specifically address chronic skin conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and scares. Topicals is a leader in inclusivity as they make products for everyone regardless of skin tone, condition, or type.
3. Pattern Beauty (patternbeauty.com)
Inspired by her hair, Traces Ellis Ross founded Pattern Beauty in 2018. Matching her open and fun spirit, Pattern serves curly heads of all kinds. The products are not formulated to tame the hair (unless that is what you want). Instead, they amplify its size, allowing it to take up as much space as you wish.
4. The Honey Pot Company (thehoneypot.co)
After struggling with bacterial vaginosis for several years, Bea Dixon created The Honey Pot Company in her kitchen. According to Dixon, an ancestor visited her in a dream. This dream gave her the keys to solving her issue. Utilizing herbs, The Honey Pot Company is fully organic and vows only to use the “good stuff” in their products.
5. Oui the People
Founded in 2015, this brand aims to modernize shaving. Karen Young, the founder, grew dissatisfied with how companies marketed hair removal, shaving, and beauty. She wanted consumers to feel great in the skin they have, not be searching for perfection.
These brands are moving the beauty and lifestyle industry as they create products everyone can use. Additionally, brands like Ulta, J.C. Penny, Target, and Nordstrom are highlighting Black History Month by pushing Black-owned brands to the forefront.
Celebrate Black History Month by being your most authentic self — and don’t forget to support Black-owned businesses too!
