Thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of those who came before us, Black people have obtained postsecondary degrees in record numbers. Black celebrities also have honorary degrees, which recognize their contributions to their particular fields. However, receiving a degree was far from simple for past generations.
In the Antebellum South, most Black people could not read or do basic math. As time progressed, Black folks were allowed to receive a primary education. Although it was an improvement, postsecondary education was not an option for most. Nevertheless, Black people took matters into their own hands and created colleges/universities, aka HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).
Due to the tireless dedication of the ancestors, several Black people, including celebrities, have obtained higher education from HBCUs. Some of today’s most prominent and wealthiest stars have attended these historic universities, including Oprah Winfrey (Tennessee State University), Taraji P. Henson (Howard University), and Michael Strahan (Texas State University).
Several Black celebrities have been given honorary degrees. Typically, honorary degrees recognize those who have contributed to their field in ways equal to the work of receiving a degree in the traditional ways. Here are eight Black celebrities with honorary degrees!
