A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern California, near the small town of Ferndale in Humboldt County, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at approximately 2:00 PM ET (9:00 AM GMT) and was followed by multiple aftershocks.
Initially, a tsunami warning was issued for the northern California and southern Oregon coasts. However, the warning was later rescinded, providing relief to residents who had braced for potential impacts.
Ferndale Residents Share Harrowing Accounts
In Ferndale, residents are grappling with the aftermath of the earthquake. Olivia Cobian, innkeeper at the Gingerbread Mansion Inn, described the scene as chaotic: “The inside looks like a warzone. We have huge cast-iron fireplaces that have been lifted and shifted, and everything has fallen over or broken.”
Another resident likened the damage to a bomb going off in every room, underscoring the intensity of the tremor.
In Half Moon Bay, California, hotel guest Kayla Aihara received back-to-back alerts about the earthquake and the initial tsunami warning. Hotel staff instructed guests to vacate areas like the gym and seek higher ground. Some gathered near the shoreline, anxiously watching the Pacific waves for any signs of a tsunami.
Response and Ongoing Assessments
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the earthquake and is coordinating with state emergency officials. Meanwhile, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services reported no immediate signs of widespread damage but noted that assessments are ongoing.
First responders are surveying buildings, roads, and infrastructure to identify any structural damage. Such evaluations are crucial, especially in a region prone to seismic activity due to the confluence of multiple tectonic plates.
California’s Earthquake History
Northern California is no stranger to earthquakes. The region’s history includes notable seismic events, such as the devastating 1994 Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles, which caused widespread destruction, killing dozens and injuring thousands.
This latest earthquake serves as a reminder of the area’s vulnerability to natural disasters. As officials continue to evaluate the situation, residents are urged to remain cautious and follow updates from local authorities.
