Kamala Harris’ journey to the 2024 presidential election is about more than just policy—it’s a movement, and leading that charge is the powerhouse sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA). Known for their activism, philanthropy, and deep commitment to social change, the AKAs have been a significant force in shaping leaders like Harris. From the moment Harris stepped into the political spotlight, her sorority sisters have been at her side, supporting her with the kind of loyalty and determination only a century-old sisterhood can provide.
AKA’s Legacy of Activism
With Election Day just weeks away, the AKAs are already mobilizing on a national scale, pushing their first sorority sister toward the Oval Office. The power of AKA isn’t just in their numbers—though they boast more than 300,000 members worldwide—it’s in their legacy of advocacy and community organizing. As one of the most prominent African American sororities, their deep connections in Black communities and their history of fighting for civil rights, education reform, and voter advocacy are resources that Kamala is actively leveraging as she takes on the race of her life.
Beyond their legendary “Skee-Wee” call of unity, AKA’s contributions to Harris’ campaign include voter registration drives, fundraising events, and grassroots organizing efforts designed to reach key demographics, especially Black women, who have proven to be a decisive force in recent elections. AKAs have always stood for the empowerment of Black communities, and they see Kamala Harris not just as a candidate but as a symbol of what their sorority stands for—Black excellence, education, and leadership.
The Power of AKA Without Direct Endorsement

However, as a nonprofit organization, AKA is restricted by IRS rules from directly endorsing any political candidate for elective public office. Even though Harris is one of their own, the sorority isn’t able to explicitly state its excitement about the possibility of an AKA occupying the Oval Office. Instead, AKA emphasizes its nonpartisan networking, volunteering, and get-out-the-vote efforts. While individual members of the sorority are free to openly support Harris, most AKAs have been tight-lipped about their personal mobilization on her behalf, instead focusing on organizing around broader issues that align with Harris’ campaign.
With Election Day fast approaching, the race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is tightening. Recent polls suggest a close contest, with Harris holding a slim lead in several battleground states, but with a margin that could swing either way. As of now, national polls indicate that Harris is leading Trump by 2 to 3 percentage points, but both campaigns are pushing hard to lock in undecided voters.
As Harris approaches the finish line, the question remains: will the power of Alpha Kappa Alpha and their tireless grassroots efforts be enough to push Kamala Harris across the finish line and claim victory in 2024, breaking yet another glass ceiling?
