Little Dragon’s music video for their song “Strobe Light” released July 19th is a beautiful celebration of Androgyny.
The actors in the video highlight something that is not often spoken about: the feminine side of the Black male. The video features Black men in feminine outfits: sombrero, pink, flowers, earrings — all merging with the masculine side of them.
Femininity is not often spoken about when it comes to men, it is a typical gender role and stereotype that males should always be tough, emotionless as possible and dress “like a boy.” Little Dragon’s video breaks every one of those laws, highlighting the gentlemanliness that a male may be experiencing or not always show.
Viewers also appreciated the choice in ethnicity, one viewer commenting “Love the show of culture in the vid! Perfect for one of my favorites off the new album.” Another commenting “thanks for repping South Africa, Little Dragon.”
Dragons’ video speaks volumes and will hopefully help other society’s break out of gender norms and stereotypes. It’s important to have representation of Black Queer life from all cultures. For that we thank you Little Dragon.
