Trayvon Martin’s story launched a national conversation about racial profiling when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in 2013. It may seem like a long time ago, but the tragedy is still debated and looked to for evidence against the current claim that we live in a post-racial America. To preserve this sentiment, Jay Z will be collaborating with not an artist, but a film company for his latest endeavor. The rapper turned businessman has plans to work with The Weinstein Company to produce a six part docu-series and a movie on the life of Trayvon Martin.
The works will be based on two books. The first is “Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice and Why We Continue to Repeat It,” which was written by Lisa Bloom. Bloom was an NBC analyst for the Zimmerman trial. The second is much more personal – it is a biography authored by Trayvon’s parents. “Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin” details the life of Martin, as Jay Z’s latest project intends to as well.
