As print media begins to fall off and give way to the digital sphere, the shock value of an image can be the difference between being forgotten in the industry or living to see another day. That may have been the intention of Hustler Magazine’s recent 2017 anniversary cover. The controversial photo of a woman in a star-spangled hijab with exposed underboob has created much talk.
Hustler Magazine’s Larry Flynt described the image to Fox News as “an irreverent political statement against the taboos of repression.” Right above the model’s breast, the words ‘Freedom First’ are emblazoned across the hijab. This has been seen as deeply disrespectful to some. However you choose to interpret the men’s magazine’s bold move, one can say for certain that they are receiving the loud conversation they wanted from the public.
