It was an appointment that shocked fashion creatives but nevertheless, Hedi Slimane is back. Céline’s new Creative Director will also become their Artistic & Image Director along with designing a menswear line. Has LVMH made their most genius move?
There’s been a never-ending rollercoaster of fashion directors exiting and changing lanes lately but nobody expected Hedi Slimane to make his return to Céline. The news came over the weekend as it was announced not only would Slimane be the brand’s Creative Director but their Artistic and Image Director too. The former Yves Saint Laurent chief will also be designing a menswear line along with couture.
Bernard Arnault, LVMH (Céline’s parent company) chief executive, have said they’re thrilled to welcome Mr. Slimane back to the design world where Céline will see couture, womenswear and menswear. “I am particularly happy that Hedi is back within the LVMH Group and taking the reins of our Céline maison. He is one of the most talented designers of our time. I have been a great admirer of his work since we collaborated on Dior Homme, which he launched to global critical acclaim in the 2000s. His arrival at Céline reinforces the great ambitions that LVMH has for this maison.”

Céline fans and others in the industry were equally as surprised when Phoebe Philo departed the brand recently. Seen as a core part of Céline and what it stood for, she was Creative Director of the house for the last ten years and will present her final collection, AW18, in March. Many anticipate that Hedi will add brand new dimensions to Céline.
Slimane told the press: “I am delighted to join Bernard Arnault in this all-embracing and fascinating mission for Céline…I greatly look forward to returning to the exciting world of fashion and the dynamism of the ateliers.”
Hedi will take the helm at Céline from February 1st when he will bring a new direction. Rumor has it, he may also launch their first fragrance while September ’18 in Paris will see his first collection presented. All eyes are sure to be on this journey!
Are you excited to see what Hedi Slimane brings to Céline? Do you think the brand could become as politicized as others have recently?
