Running is one of the most effective and low effort ways to get fit. You don’t have to be a suburban mom with all the time on her hands or a super dedicated athlete training for a marathon. If you can move, you can run. That is why it is so popular. From professionals to newbies, across generations and cultures, you can find a runner. Here is a beginner’s guide to getting fit by running – no matter who you are.

Find a Partner

A friend is going to keep you motivated and hold you accountable. Nike’s Unexpected Run campaign taught us, seeing others around you run – that feels like community.  Finding a community of runners gives you physical and social benefits as well. For those days when you cannot find the energy to get to your workout – you can find the strength knowing someone else is counting on you. You can celebrate your highs together and pull each other out of those unmotivated lows.

Plan a Route

Most people envision a gray treadmill pointed at the wall when thinking of doing cardio. However, it can be fun once you change the visuals. A scenic trail full of greenery, a trail along the skyline, and just seeing fellow runners will keep you engaged and motivated. Keep it interesting when choosing a path to run on. While running, you can explore different neighborhoods and open your mind to travel and experience different cultures. By never letting your field of view get boring, your workout won’t be either.

Stay Nourished:

How you exercise and what you put into your body are both important elements in getting fit. When developing a running routine, you may notice your meals affecting your workouts for better or worse. Whether it is introducing more carbs, veggies, or protein into your diet, you start to develop a healthier lifestyle. Make sure to stay hydrated before, after, and even during your runs. You lose water when sweating so make sure to replace those fluids with water and electrolytes.

Create A Playlist

Music can turn any task into a good time. Curate a playlist full of songs that make you feel like that girl and hit the pavement. A good set of songs can completely distract you from the workout. In a blink of an eye, you can end up listening to an entire album. But, do stay alert; keep that music at a reasonable volume, especially if you prefer to run at night.

Start At Your Own Pace

Running can teach you about yourself physically and mentally. You do not have to run a mile on your first try. Patience is a virtue – cater your workout to you specifically. As we saw in Nike Unexpected Run, your main strength is mental perseverance – not your speed. It is okay to take it easy. Start with a couple of blocks and increase as you get more comfortable. You will be surprised by the unexpected endurance you will build up. Focus more on the freeing aspects of running, the scenery, the music, your company. As a beginner, rather than achieving high athletic standards, tap into the freeing nature of a run.
