Mother’s Day is a worldwide holiday, the perfect opportunity to show appreciation and love to all mothers.
Sometimes this day can be bittersweet for people with mothers that aren’t here with us physically. It can be emotional and hard to even think about celebrating. Celebrating Mother’s Day while your mother isn’t here is always a difficult time. You can still honor her in anyway that you feel comfortable with. Certain things can be triggering but, if you are comfortable in participating in Mother’s Day this year, we have created a list of ways to honor the mothers who are with our spirits and in our hearts forever.
- Take the day off: It’s okay to take the day off and just spend some time honoring your mother. Maybe take some time to watch her favorite movie, listen to her favorite music, or eat something that she may have enjoyed.
- Write a letter or poem to her: If you feel more comfortable talking about your feelings through writing, this may be a good way to express your emotions. It can also make you feel more connected because it’s tangible. Getting a special journal, notepad, or using the notes app on your phone are some options for you to consider.
- Spend time with family: Spending time with others can certainly be helpful during these times because you don’t feel alone and you can share your favorite memories with one another; whether that be with siblings, aunts/uncles, etc.
- Create a scrapbook: Sometimes reflecting on memories alone can be comforting enough, but one way to make the memories last is to create a scrapbook or a PowerPoint that you could keep or share with family.
- Visit her friends: It could be comforting to catch up with some of your mom’s friends if she is no longer here. You all can share memories and plan dates around the day to just celebrate her.
- Visit some of her favorite places that she loved: It could be a restaurant or even her favorite stores to shop at. Visiting these places with siblings or family can make it more comforting.
- Take a trip: Taking a vacation can be a way to feel comfort and peace, whether you take a staycation or find a new destination to visit. Sometimes taking a break can relieve a lot of stress and bring a lot of bliss.
- Remember Mom through her hobbies: Do something she loves to do such as a hobby or passion she had. It can be comforting being able to connect with what she was so passionate about and made her smile.
- Celebrate: If you are up to it, having a Mother’s Day celebration can be heartwarming. Either big or small, doing something with loved ones can make the day memorable in a special way.
- Get creative: Create something in her honor to that is meaningful for Mother’s Day for you and yours. Getting together with loved ones have and have special tokens made in her honor, getting a artist to paint a favorite picture of her, or simply being around the people you love and having the support can be just as special and creative with time.
Mother’s Day is a beautiful holiday to honor the ones that brought us into the world. Some may never understand what you’re feeling and how the day affects you. Turn it into a day that gives you peace and support. We hope this list helps you celebrate your mother. Love to you and yours!
