After Beyoncé announced that she was dropping a country album on March 29, 2024, country music has been getting more attention. To prepare for the queen’s new project, the BeyHive has been studying country music stars to see where she may draw inspiration. Fans have also discovered iconic country music acts, including country music duos.
Like other genres, country music artists come in all forms, whether a full band or just one singer. Nevertheless, country music duos hold a special place in the hearts of country fans. Here are five country music duos and groups you should add to your playlist!
1. The Judds
The Judds consisted of Naomi Judd and her daughter, Wynonna. The two sang together for almost eight years before Naomi fell ill. As a duo, they topped the country music charts and won several awards, including five Grammys. Even after they disbanded, the two continued to perform together.
Unfortunately, Naomi passed away just one day before the Judds were going to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Still, their music and impact stand the test of time.
2. Florida Georgia Line
What started as buddies playing music turned into country music legends. Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard met as college students and formed the group upon graduating. Inspired by their home states, Georgia and Florida, they named their act Florida Georgia Line.
After releasing independent projects, the duo signed a record deal with Big Loud. The group succeeded with hit singles like “Cruise” and “‘Round Here.” They topped the country music charts several times and won many CMA Awards.
3. Chapel Hart
Chapel Hart is technically not a duo, but they’re so good we must include them! The group consists of three family members: Danica, Devynn, and Trea. They got their start on the popular competition show “America’s Got Talent.” Wowing the judges with their original song, “You Can Have Him Jolene,” the group received a golden buzzer, immediately advancing them to the next round.
The group ultimately placed fifth and received significant praise during their time on the show. Since appearing on the show, the group has continued to make music. According to cmt.com, Chapel Hart officially received an invitation to make their Grand Ole Opry debut in September 2022.
4. The War and Treaty
The War and Treaty is a country music duo, including husband and wife Michael and Tanya Trotter. Debuting in 2018, the duo has made waves in the country music genre. Their first album, “Healing Tide,” received critical acclaim. This result led to their second studio album, “Hearts Town,” which was inspired by Michael’s battle with PTSD.
The couple also achieved many firsts as a duo. The War and Treaty are the first Black country music duo to be nominated for a CMA for Duo of the Year in 2023. In addition, they are also the first Black country duo to receive a nomination for Duo of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2023.
5. The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks)
Hailing from Dallas, The Chicks have been pushing boundaries since 1989. The all-women group has consisted of many members over their three-decade-long career. They secured their first record deal in 1997 and have been topping the charts since then.
In 2003, The Chicks came under fire for speaking out against President George Bush’s decision to invade Iraq. This controversy led to many fans becoming disinterested in them and boycotting their music. Nevertheless, after taking time off, they released “Taking the Long Way.” Although the group was blacklisted in the country music industry, they found great success with the album, as they won several Grammys for the project.
Some of country music’s finest have come in duos and groups. As the genre continues to progress and become more diverse, more duos will emerge with iconic music.
