VanJess Get ‘Dysfunctional’ in EP “Homegrown”

Musical duo VanJess

Musical duo VanJess kicked off the year with their sensual and silky vocals in their new EP Homegrown. The features include Phony Ppl, KAYTRANADA, Devin Morrison, and more!

VanJess made their impact by posting viral covers on Vine and YouTube before releasing their first EP Silk Canvas. Their sophomore project has an influence of 90’s R&B, upbeat tempo, and subtle harmonies.

One of the lead singles “Come Over” set the warm and welcoming tone for the EP. The contralto harmonies effortlessly complement the hook and tempo. The beat encourages finger snappin’ and head boppin’ for its entirety.

The Complexity

The duo isn’t ashamed to be vocal about relationships. In ‘Slow Down’ VanJess embraces the good qualities in a relationship. The saxophone is the perfect addition to their deep vocals. It is not your normal relationship song. It highlights the complexity of communication and learning love languages.

VanJess takes it a step further with ‘Roses’. Falling in love is great but it is a delicate matter. The duo’s soft vocals emphasize the delicacy. Also, the duo gives a realistic view of love by pointing out mistakes or bad habits that make it difficult to fall in love again.

It gets dysfunctional real fast. KAYTRANADA features on ‘Dysfunctional’. He brings his staple sound of a medium tempo and a staccato beat. It is not the first time that the duo collaborated with KAYTRANADA. In his album BUBBA, the duo made an appearance on ‘Taste’. Both tracks include a fusion of dance, house, and r&b.

In the track ‘Caught Up,’ Phony Ppl gives the honest perspective of a man in a relationship. His verse contains a balance of uncertainty and trying to play it cool. The bass and guitar arrangement contains funk influence. The Nigerian American duo has released a behind-the-scenes clip of the ‘Caught Up’ music video.

VanJess has proven that they are here to stay with this project! The security that is present within the vocals and lyrics says it all. With their staple sound of contralto vocals and silky harmonies, they have made a place of their own. No matter who likes it or not.
