The Sustainable Evolution Of The North Face

History

The company was founded in 1966 in San Francisco as a climbing equipment retail store that supplied climbers. Its founders are Susie Tompkins Buell and the late Doug Tompkins, whom she met while he was hitchhiking. By the late 1990s, the label had expanded beyond outdoor enthusiasts by focusing on street couture. Since the 2000s, it has been regarded as a streetwear style symbol. This was following its acquisition by VF Corporation.

The North Face Fashion Staples

Since 1997, The North Face has had a small section of its business that sells clothing items to New York City rappers. Years later, the rand has now expanded on the streetwear front, creating collaborations with luxury brands such as Gucci and streetwear brands such as Supreme, Comme Des Garçons, Timberland, and more. This generation’s love for the brand is due to the popularity of The North Face Bubble in the 1990s. Decades later, it is still hands-down the most fly gear to own, with staple items such as the 1996 Retro Nuptse Jacket. This warm, durable jacket has a lofty 700-fill down, a water-repellent finish, and a stowable hood. It also features 100% recycled fabrics and a design inspired by the classic 1996 version.

The North Face x Gucci

The North Face and Gucci dropped the first images from what became the most hyped collection release of 2021. The collab featured an array of traditional hiking gear with a high-fashion flare. Of course, there were also prints, from florals to the classic monogrammed GGs, bubble coats in vibrant hues, fanny packs and backpacks in abstract Gucci monogrammed prints, and duo brand logo t-shirts.

THE NORTH FACE X MAISON MARGIELA

The North Face’s and Maison Margiela’s collaboration was unveiled during London Fashion Week in February 2020. The unisex collection took some of the popular silhouettes from The North Face’s existing staples. The Parisian brand reworked the Himalayan Coat, Denali Jacket fleece, and the Nuptse puffer jacket and stamped them with the logos from both brands.

THE NORTH FACE X SUPREME

The North Face and Supreme’s relationship dates back to 2007. Their very first offering in their collaboration was the Summit Jackets, which were released in color-blocked colorways. This collaboration’s outerwear featured bold green, yellow, and red hues. It also featured city landscapes, animal and camo prints, as well as unique logo placements.
