The 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony was held last night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The award show was hosted by Trevor Noah (again) and featured performances from Lil Nas X, Nas, and Jon Batiste. The 2022 Grammys was the place for many first wins for Black musicians from SZA, to Doja Cat to Jazmine Sullivan.
Silk Sonic Sweeps
The 2022 Grammys kicked off with a showstopping performance from Silk Sonic (R&B duo group made up of Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars). The duo debuted at the 63rd Grammys just last year. After kicking off the Grammys with their performance of “777” (an appropriate nod to the Vegas venue), the duo went on to win their first award of the night for Song of the Year, “Leave the Door Open”. Silk Sonic went on to win all of their Grammy Award nominations for the night: Best R&B Song, Best R&B Performance, and Record of the Year. As Anderson .Paak said in his award speech for Record of the Year “In the industry, we call that a clean sweep.”
Jazmine Sullivan is a Two Time Grammy Award Winner
After 13 years since her first Grammy nomination and 15 nominations later, Jazmine Sullivan finally won her long-awaited award. Sullivan took home not only one but two Grammys for Best R&B Album for Heaux Tales and tied with Silk Sonic for Best R&B performance for “Pick Up Your Feelings”. Sullivan dedicated her R&B Album acceptance speech to Black women.
Doja Cat & SZA’s First-Ever Grammy Wins
Last night marked a monumental night for musicians Doja Cat and SZA as they took home their first-ever Grammys. As predicted, the duo won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Kiss Me More”. This marks SZA’s first-ever Grammy after receiving a total of 14 Grammy nominations. Later in the night, in an interview with TV/Radio Room, SZA teased that her follow-up album to CTRL is coming very soon.
After being snubbed last year at the 63rd Grammy Award show, Doja Cat returned to the Grammys with eight nominations this year. Finally, she took home her first-ever Grammy for the smash single “Kiss Me More” off her album Planet Her. In a funny yet emotional speech, Doja Cat revealed how much the award meant to the singer who had recently been considering quitting music.
First Black Album of the Year in 14 Years
The night was not over without awarding the coveted Grammy for Album of the Year. The Grammy went to the top Grammy nominee of the night Jon Batiste for We Are. This marks the first time in 14 years that the Grammy for Album of the Year was awarded to a Black artist. Batiste went home with five out of his 11 Grammy Award nominations.
Other Notable Wins
Best New Artist, Grammy nominee Baby Keem won his first-ever. It was Best Rap Performance for “Family Ties” featuring Kendrick Lamar.
Kanye West won two out of the four rap nominations of the night from songs off his latest album, Donda. First “Hurricane” by Kanye West featuring The Weeknd & Lil Baby for Best Melodic Rap Performance and second, “Jail” Kanye West featuring Jay-Z for Best Rap Song. Kanye West and Jay-Z are now tied as the rappers with the most wins in Grammy history.
Lucky Daye was among the multiple Black artists who received their first-ever Grammy last night. Daye won Best Progressive R&B Album for Table For Two.
For the second year in a row Tyler, The Creator took home the Grammy for Best Rap Album for his latest album Call Me If You Get Lost.
H.E.R. didn’t go home empty-handed as the singer won the Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Fight for You”. Last year, the song won Best Original Song at the Oscars, making H.E.R. halfway to her EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status.
