Ofunne Amaka: The Beauty Boss Behind Cocoa Swatches

In honor of Black History Month, we celebrate beauty brand entrepreneur Ofunne Ameka, founder of Cocoa Swatches.

Ofunne Amaka, 31, is an entrepreneur and beauty blogger who has created a true empire for herself. Ofunne started blogging in 2007 and created her Instagram account, “Cocoa Swatches” in 2015. Through it, Ofunne offers a platform for Black women who’ve had a hard time finding the right foundation shade.

Cocoa Swatches’ Instagram is the answer to the lack of representation of dark-skin in beauty. For our first virtual event, The Beauty of Business, we had the chance to have her as a speaker! Ofunne shares that her main goal is to celebrate underrepresented skin tones.

The choice of the word “Cocoa” refers to the color of Ofunne’s skin while the word “Swatches” means “the wash of color against a blank Canva” as Ofunne declared to Crowned Ladies.

After a huge international success of the page, Ofunne decided in February 2016 to expand her brand to a beauty app! This app allows dark-skinned women and overall beauty lovers to find makeup products that match their skin.

Designed with brown and golden tones, the app makes us think of our melanin and our black girl magic glow. You will find the latest must-have beauty products on the app, such as foundations, glosses, and concealers. The aim is to highlight brands with products that match our deep complexions.

In addition, Ofunne Amaka is sampling products through her YouTube channel. It is an engaging way to see the result of products on her. This makes it easier to get a quick idea of how the beauty products may look on dark skin. Ofunne also takes make-up pictures so her followers can be inspired and reproduce the make-up. She has received a ton of positive feedback on her social media. This shows that black women have long been ignored in the beauty world. Additionally, Ofunne Amaka has also launched a foundation brand called The Basics.

Representation matters and we love to see black women changing the game! This Black History Month we recognize Ofunne Amaka for what she brought to the black beauty world with Cocoa Swatches. ?
