CoverGirl Launches Their New Campaign with First Vitiligo Model!

Meet Amy Deanna, the new face of Cover Girl.

Black History Month is still in full throttle and CoverGirl’s new model just made the list. Amy Deanna became the first black model with vitiligo to be the face of their new ad campaign, #IAmWhatIMakeUp.

According to Glamour, works of changing the companies slogan from the beloved “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful, Covergirl” to I Am What I Make Up had been taking place since October of 2017. With new models of color being added to the brand such as famous basketball wife Ayesha Curry and HBO’s Insecure actress, Issa Rae.

About Amy

Deanna was always inspired by the beautiful black women that appeared in CoverGirl’s campaigns such as Queen Latifah and Zendaya.

Vitiligo awareness is something that is very important to me,” she tells PeopleStyle. “Being given a platform to do so means so much. I welcome all appropriate questions about vitiligo. At the end of the day, I am just like everyone else, I just happen to have spots. It’s a part of my identity, but it doesn’t define who I am … For there to be so many of us and so little representation, it’s truly disheartening. I work with CoverGirl; I’m a black woman; I have vitiligo. That is empowering.”

For those who may not know, vitiligo is a long-term skin condition characterized by patches of the skin losing their pigment. It is very common in the United States, and Deanna is not the only model who suffers from it. America’s Next Top Model contestant Winnie Harlow also suffers from vitiligo but is a wonderful role model in the sense that she did not let that stop her.

About the Campaign

The new ad features Deanna in Cover Girl’s new TruBlend foundation, which is said to fit 99% of different skin shades. With a growing fan base and over 8,000 Instagram followers, Amy is making it clear that no one or nothing is stopping her.

Amy’s Message

I was called a cow today for the first time,” she had written in an Instagram post. Being a model, you are already open to harsh criticism, and having a unique condition such a vitiligo makes it even harsher, but Deanna teaches us that true beauty comes from within.

It stung a little,” she continued. “But at least I know that true beauty comes from within and that no matter what any one says I am beautiful inside and out.”
