As Black women, we don’t play about our hair. From braids and wigs to sew-ins, we are always searching for our next protective style. Moreover, finding the perfect hair brand that provides high-quality hair is equally paramount — especially when the company is Black-owned.

Our hair is an investment. So, it’s crucial to identify brands that serve our wants and needs. This is where Black-owned hair brands come in handy. The holidays are upon us, and if you want to deliver an unforgettable hair slay, you need to tap into these Black-owned hair brands immediately.

Nourie

Birthed by CEO and founder Osahon Ojeaga, Nourie is a patent-pending, plant-sourced, sustainable braiding hair brand void of harsh chemicals. Like many of us, Ojeaga experienced scalp irritation from braiding hair she purchased online. After contacting the company, she faced terrible customer service. As a result, Ojeaga ultimately decided to start her own hair company. She initially started a synthetic hair company, but when trying to eliminate plastic from the packaging, she thought about removing it altogether.

“There was a lightbulb moment. Why am I just thinking about the packing? Let’s think about the product. How can we make it sustainable?” Ojeaga told Bustle

The brand received its first investment of $500,000 with no prototype. As of 2022, Nourie raised $2.5 million in seed money. Alongside Nourie’s chief scientific officer and co-founder, Dr. Mary Ellen Moore, the team has created an eco-friendly alternative that can withstand water, gel, and some high temperatures.

Dosso Beauty

Dosso Beauty was founded in 2017 by entrepreneur Kadidja Dosso. The brand offers its notable Hypoallergenic Braiding Hair and other beauty products. In 2021, the Hampton alum was awarded $250,000 after winning Pharrell’s Black Ambition initiative contest.

Since its inception, Dosso has amassed her beauty brand into a six-figure business by creating affordable, organic, and gender-inclusive products. At an early age, Dosso believed she was destined to create an empire similar to legendary entrepreneur Madame C.J. Walker.

“What motivates me to continue to grow Dosso Beauty is the everlasting imprint that I know that Dosso Beauty will make on the beauty industry, my community, and each person that we encounter,” Dosso shared on her website.

Yummy Extensions

Yummie O stepped out on faith and launched Yummy Extensions in 2013. Although Yummie faced trials and tribulations in the development process, she didn’t let those struggles deter her from building her business. From tech queen to beauty entrepreneur, Yummie has transformed her self-named hair brand into an empire with a large online following and two brick-and-mortar locations in Dallas and Brooklyn. The hair brand is praised for its quality control, longevity, and versatility. Yummy Extensions are 100% organic and sure to have you looking fierce.

Go Naked Hair

Go Naked Hair is the brainchild of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” alum Porsha Guobadia. Since Guobadia’s hair has always been laid, it was no surprise when the reality star launched her business in 2014. The hair brand provides quality hair extensions, wigs, lace fronts, and lashes.

Ayya Hair

Based in Nigeria, Ayya Hair is considered one of the best braiding hair companies available. The brand has luxury braiding hair stores throughout Nigeria — from Lagos to Port Harcourt. They are committed to selling the highest-quality braiding hair at affordable prices.

Kendra’s Boutique

Last but not least, we have Kendra’s Boutique. Founder Kendra Cooksey started the business in 2012, which has quickly grown a dedicated fanbase. The brand is a celeb favorite worn by the elite: Aaliyah Jay, Cardi B, Rihanna, Victoria Monét, and more. Today, Kendra’s Boutique is international, serving nearly 200 countries.

Contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of Black-owned hair brands to spend your coins with. So, which Black-owned hair brand is your favorite? Let us know in the comment section below!
